Youssef Moussa, Masr Fruit - Egyptian onions

"EU: "Steady season with good prices throughout"

The Egyptian onion season is finished for this year and according to Youssef Moussa, from Masr Fruit, The Netherlands, the season has been good in general.

The Egyptian red onions fetched a good price on the Dutch market, "It was a steady season with good prices throughout, at the start of the season we were importing 2-3 containers per week, there was a few week's gap then we increased to 4-5 containers for the last few weeks."

The quality remained good throughout the season, and Moussa explains that the season lasted longer than usual, continuing into the end of July, he puts this down to possibly late New Zealand and Chile seasons.

In contrast to this there was no real market for Egyptian yellow onions as there was no gap between the Dutch and new Spanish supply.

Meanwhile the Egyptian pomegranate season is underway at Masr Fruit and the last of the dried garlic is coming in. Egyptian Dried garlic is a new product in Europe, and they are trying to introduce it in the market.

In the coming months the spring onions, Masr Fruit’s main product, will be arriving as well as another first for Masr Fruit - flat beans. Strawberries will begin at the end of November.
