Asprocan prepares meetings
Spain: reactions in a posible decrease of the EU banana tariff

Barranquilla – The Association of banana producers from the Canary Islands (Asprocan) will meet the president of the government of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero Baute, tomorrow to prepare a meeting to be held in Madeira, the 4. October with other EU banana growers.

Asprocan will discuss with the President the implications of the demand of Ecuador and the US before the WTO to reduce the importing tariff of third countries' bananas. They also will show their concern on the proposal of liberalization of the market for ACP countries. Finally, they will discuss the implications of bilateral agreements in the liberalization process of the banana market. Asprocan asked the EU representatives why on the first round of negotiations for an Association Agreement between the EU and the Andean countries, the meeting did not count with representatives of European banana growers.

Finally, Asprocan made public its support to the disaster caused by the hurricane Dean in the banana fields of Martinique and Guadaloupe. They will analyze the economic implications in the EU market in general and the Spanish in particular.
