On 13 November, Laos and China expanded their agricultural cooperation following discussions in Chongqing during the 9th ASEAN–China Ministerial SPS Cooperation Meeting.
A new sanitary and phytosanitary protocol was signed between Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Kikeo Singnavong and Zhao Zenglian, China's Deputy Minister of the General Customs Administration. The agreement enables the export of Lao longan, which becomes the 40th Lao product approved for the Chinese market.
Both countries also agreed to open the Chinese market to Lao durian under SPS conditions. Authorities noted that the agreements will support Laos in diversifying its export portfolio and increasing its engagement in regional trade, while stressing that Lao exporters must meet China's quality and safety requirements.
Laos and China already cooperate through several agricultural initiatives, including a 25-year program focused on cultivation practices, yield improvements, cost reduction, and competitiveness. These activities support Laos' objective of exporting 400 tons of premium durian to China by 2026.
Officials also reviewed ongoing work to expand agricultural trade and streamline procedures related to market access. At present, 39 SPS protocols are in place, allowing exports of 35 plant-based and four animal products from Laos to China. Negotiations continue for other categories, including frozen and cooked beef, which China has agreed to further evaluate.
