The Agriculture and Livestock Department of Logar province reports higher onion production this year, with yields increasing by nearly 300 metric tons compared with last season. Qari Abdul Basir Shahid, Revenue Regulation Director at the department, told Pajhwok Afghan News that onions were planted on 1,239 hectares across the province, producing 43,347.5 metric tons.
He linked the increase to public awareness programs for farmers, the distribution of improved seed, and stable security conditions. According to the department, last year onions were grown on 1,230 hectares with a total output of 43,050 metric tons. Shahid said production of apples, beans, and watermelons also rose this year and attributed the trend to management practices, revised strategies, and incentives for growers.
A grower in Pul-e-Alam, Rohullah, confirmed the higher yields but said market access remains limited. He reported that onions are selling at 50 afghanis per maund. At current exchange rates, this is roughly US$0.70 per maund.
Logar province remains one of Afghanistan's agriculturally productive regions, with most residents engaged in farming as their main source of income.
