Malaysia launches durian processing center to stabilize prices and ensure supply

In a strategic move to stabilise durian market prices and ensure a consistent supply chain, the Johor State Government of Malaysia has partnered with the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) to establish a "Durian Collection, Processing, Packaging and Sales Centre" (CPPDC) in Tangkak. This new centre is designed to regularly purchase durians from local farmers and agricultural institutions across Tangkak, Muar, and Segamat, especially during surplus seasons when prices typically plummet due to oversupply, as reported by Guojiguoshu in an article published recently.

Johor's durian industry operates year-round, but it peaks between June and August, often leading to overproduction. Conversely, the months of March and September see reduced yields, pushing prices up. By introducing the CPPDC, authorities aim to mitigate these price swings by freezing or processing the fruit during high-production periods for year-round distribution.

The centre, which has already begun partial operations since last year, is expected to be fully operational in 2025. It will handle various grades of durian, not just export-standard A-grade fruit. Notably, the centre will purchase well-known varieties such as Musang King, D13, IOI, Bamboo Kick, Black Thorn, and Golden Phoenix.

This initiative marks a significant step toward improving income stability for durian farmers and securing a more balanced durian market in Johor.
