Irrigation failure hits South Kashmir apple farms

An inoperative irrigation lift in South Kashmir's Shopian district is impacting numerous apple growers amid dry conditions. The non-functional system, intended to transport water to the elevated Karewa plateau, remains a concern for local cultivators.

Bashir Ahmad, a grower in the Moshwara area, expressed worry, highlighting, "This is the peak season when our orchards need regular water. Without irrigation, the trees are wilting, and we fear massive crop loss." Farmers in this region depend on minimal rainfall, but an ongoing dry spell has exacerbated the irrigation issue.

Initiated in 2010, the irrigation scheme aimed to be operational by 2014, yet it remains inactive. A resident questioned the project's viability, remarking, "I don't understand why the government spent crores on the scheme if they couldn't ensure its proper functioning." Many orchardists echo this sentiment as they strive to maintain their orchards amidst harsh conditions.

An appeal to the authorities has been issued by the farming community to resolve this situation. The orchardists seek operational support to mitigate potential crop damage.
