During a bilateral meeting on June 4, 2025, in Paris, Indonesia officially requested more market access for tropical fruit to New Zealand. The request was part of wider trade talks at the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting, as reported by Republik Merdeka- an Indonesian news site.
Following the success in exporting pineapples, Indonesia is now encouraging higher volumes of exports of bananas, mangoes, papayas and other high-value fruits. Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto noted the strategic importance of fruit diversification, exports and strengthening supply chain presence in high-value markets like New Zealand.
Bilateral trade between the two nations hit USD 1.92 billion in 2024, with fresh fruit among the top movers. Indonesian exporters are eager to capitalise on New Zealand's open trade policies and domestic demand for tropical, nutrient-rich fruits.
The step aligns with Indonesia's general push to increase its fresh fruit infiltration in high-income markets, as New Zealand, renowned for food safety standards, continues to be more receptive to tropical imports.
