Ecuador focuses on expanding trade with China through new products

In an effort to enhance bilateral trade, Ecuador is capitalizing on a recent trade agreement with China, which came into effect on May 1, 2024. The agreement targets the inclusion of new products, with blueberries currently undergoing the phytosanitary approval process. According to Sonsoles GarcĂa, the Minister of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment, and Fisheries, pitaya (dragon fruit) and blueberries are in high demand in China, with pitaya already gaining phytosanitary access. The process for phytosanitary approvals can be lengthy, but the trade agreement includes a specific chapter to expedite these procedures, potentially involving delegate exchanges between Ecuador and China to inspect production and safety practices.

Additionally, Ecuador is in the process of negotiating trade agreements with other nations, including South Korea, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates. The pre-signing with South Korea occurred last year, with the final signing anticipated in the latter half of this year after a legal review. Negotiations with Canada and the United Arab Emirates are progressing, with virtual meetings planned to finalize the agreements. The timeline for these agreements suggests a possible conclusion with Canada by December and with the United Arab Emirates by November, contingent on the negotiation schedules.
