Pakistan has ascended to the global top-ten in potato production, with over eight million tons produced due to increased cultivation area and enhanced agricultural practices. The nation, now the ninth-largest potato producer globally, witnessed a production surge of over 35 percent in the past three years. The 2022-23 season forecasts another high yield, reinforcing Pakistan's position among leading potato producers. China, India, and Ukraine dominate the global production rankings, with Pakistan surpassing France and closely trailing the Netherlands in output.
Official figures show a significant area dedicated to potato cultivation, with a notable increase in production over the previous year. The crop has become a crucial economic player in Pakistan's agriculture, following staples like wheat, rice, and maize. Despite an average yield lower than global standards, progressive farming techniques have doubled yields in some areas. The Punjab province, contributing over 95 percent of the national output, has seen substantial growth in both cultivation area and production.
The Potato Growers Association highlights the sector's success, emphasizing its positive impact on both domestic and international markets. Despite a decline in export value, Pakistan has experienced growth in export quantity, mainly to Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, the UAE, the Russian Federation, and Qatar. The country aims to enhance its position in the global potato market through increased production and export activities.
