Fruit prices rise along with temperature in Chennai

With the onset of higher temperatures in Chennai, fruit prices at the Koyambedu wholesale market have seen a 10 percent increase. This market, pivotal for its supply from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, is experiencing a surge in demand. "As many as 150 vehicles of fruits arrived at the market for the last few weeks. Since the mercury level surged from February unlike the previous years, the demand for fruits among the customers has also increased recently. It leads to a marginal hike. As the temperature level is expected to increase further the prices will also surge accordingly based on the demand," explained R Ramesh, a wholesale fruit trader.

The market anticipates an influx of 50 additional vehicles of mangoes next month, marking a significant increase in sales after two years. Current prices range, with grapes at Rs 35 to Rs 50 per kg, watermelons at Rs 20-22 per kg, apples between Rs 150 to Rs 250 per kg, pomegranates at Rs 120 to Rs 200 per kg, sweet limes from Rs 45 to Rs 60 per kg, and oranges priced Rs 20 to Rs 45 per kg. Retailers in Chennai are also experiencing brisk sales, with prices marked up by Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg over wholesale rates.
