Bahia state observes a remarkable surge in fruit exports

From January to November 2023, fruit exports from the Brazilian state of Bahia skyrocketed, with shipments touching approximately 170,000 tons and generating an impressive revenue of R$1.05 billion. This signifies a 37% increase from the previous year.

The success is attributed to mango and grape harvests, along with strong shipments of pineapple, apricot, fig, guava, papaya, watermelon, lemon, and lime, as per the data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Agrostat/Mapa).

Guilherme Coelho, president of Abrafrutas, praised the efforts to find new markets for Brazilian fruits, leading to new export destinations and a significant increase in trade. Coelho attributed the growth to favorable pricing dynamics in 2023 that benefited Northeast region producers.

Despite the growth, significant export challenges persist. Anderson Ferreira, a mango producer in the Maniçoba region, highlighted the logistical challenges at the Salvador Container Terminal (Tecon). Luiz Soares, a grape producer in the Juazeiro region, stressed the need for continued cooperation and logistical improvements to meet global demand.

The growth in Bahia's fruit exports not only strengthens the regional economy; it also solidifies Brazil's position as a leading global supplier of fresh fruits.
