Potato Market Update 20th December

'Demand is strong for both retail and food service trade'

The busiest retail week of the year is upon us, and demand is strong for both retail and food service trade accordingly. Some growers continue to harvest remaining fields where possible. The amount of clay that was drawn in at harvest is making it very difficult to predict saleable yield and there are reports that issues in storage are causing some problems.

In the U.K. there has been good ex farm movement this week as buyers accumulate stocks for the Christmas period. For chipping varieties, prices remain firm, and a few growers have managed to push for increases this week as buyers stock up for the holiday period.

In Europe, efforts continue to lift remaining crops. The area left in the ground in Belgium is 5 to 10% and slightly higher in Holland. Some growers in Belgium have covered their crops with poly covers to prevent frost damage.
