According to the Brazilian Ministry of Health, fruit production in the country should increase by 22.9% in the next decade. From January to June 2023, the value of fruit exports was US$533.3 million, corresponding to an export volume of 483,300 tons to 120 countries. The EU is the main destination for national exports. Among the fruits that showed the best results is mango, whose export value in the first half was US$68.4 million.
It is estimated that there are more than 1,600 varieties of the fruit worldwide, with India being the country with the greatest variety. The Brazilian Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruits and Derivatives (Abrafrutas) points out that world mango production is at least 42.8 million tons. The three main producers are: India (38.19%), China (9.82%) and Thailand (7.07%).
Brazil occupies seventh place in the world ranking of production. Currently, the Northeast is the largest producer and exporter of mangoes, mainly in the São Francisco Valley region. Bahia is the state with the largest harvested area of the fruit, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
