The harvest of melons and watermelons has just started in Castilla-La Mancha. Producers expect normal yields and a gradual end to the shortage that still prevails in the European market.
“We started the campaign in La Mancha the week of July 17,” stated Tomás García-Escribano, CEO of Cincofresh. "Prices are currently high due to the lack of product in other growing areas of Spain. In La Mancha, prices will adjust depending on the demand, but we don't expect a decrease in the short term,” he added.

In principle, the same area of melon and watermelon has been planted in Castilla-La Mancha as last year. According to Tomás, a good season is expected in terms of both volumes and quality. “There will be some shortage in July, but in August there won't be any more supply issues,” he stated.
According to Cincofresh's CEO, the shortage of supply in June and July due to unfavorable weather conditions has caused many inconveniences due to the lack of regular supply. "Efforts are being made to deal with the supply problem as best as possible. The shortage is expected to last until the end of July," he added.
"As a result of the shortage, customers have looked for other options such as Morocco or Italy, but as soon as we have supply, they come back to us," Tomás stated.
Cincofresh sells about 8 million kilos of watermelon and 7 million kilos of melon a year, and it expects to sell these volumes again this year.
