"Blueberries are the next big hit after cherries"

The blueberry is a beautiful and nutritious fruit that is known to effectively help eyesight. People in the market are paying more and more attention to the blueberry. Mr. Huang Zegui, spokesperson for Guangzhou Wanxin International Trade Co., Ltd., recently talked about developments in the Chinese blueberry market.

"Most of the blueberries currently available in the Chinese market come from Peru, Chile, and some production areas in China. The Peruvian blueberries enter the market in October and the supply season continues until February in the subsequent year. Chilean blueberries enter the market in November and leave the market in March. And afterwards the blueberries from domestic production areas in Yunnan, Liaoning, and Guizhou enter the market," said Mr. Huang.

"The product movement of blueberries involves large volumes, and the prices are reasonable. Consumers have become much more knowledgeable about blueberries in the last few years. They also understand the health benefits of blueberries for our eyesight. I believe that blueberries will become the next big hit after cherries!" Mr. Huang talked optimistically about the Chinese blueberry market.

Mr. Huang continued: "Blueberries are quite sensitive to weather conditions. They easily deteriorate if the temperature is too high during transport or in storage. Under these conditions they quickly lose 'fruit powder', or produce water vapor. However, imported blueberries enter the Chinese market during the winter season, which means that they are not easily exposed to high temperatures."

'Fruit powder' is the white powder-like substance that forms on the skin of blueberries. This is produced by the blueberry itself to protect the blueberry from shrinking or deteriorating. Usually, a thicker layer of fruit powder offers better protection.

When asked about product quality, Mr. Huang explained: "The product quality and the price of blueberries are both quite stable now. Take the peak sales period around Chinese Spring Festival [1 February, 2022] as an example. The blueberries sell well before the Spring Festival, but afterwards the conditions are not that great, regardless of price or product quality." Mr. Huang continued, "The product quality of Peruvian blueberries has continuously improved in the last few years. The product quality of Chilean blueberries was quite stable in the last few years, but more recently the product quality seems to have dropped, while the product quality of Peruvian blueberries grows better every year. Chilean blueberries used to cut down the sales figures of Peruvian blueberries as soon as the Chilean blueberries entered the market. That is no longer the case. The Peruvian blueberry is our company's target development project because the product quality continues to improve."

"There are various prices for blueberries, mainly on the basis of product quality. Early in the season, the price of import blueberries is around 60-80 yuan [9.44-12.59 USD] for medium-quality blueberries, while the price of high-quality blueberries was around 90-100 yuan [14.16-15.73 USD]. Domestic blueberries just entered the market, but this is still early in the domestic production season, so the supply volume is rather small. That is why the price of domestic blueberries is somewhat high at 150 yuan [23.60 USD] per 1.5kg for medium-size blueberries, 170 yuan [26.75 USD] for large blueberries, and 200 yuan [31.47 USD] for super-size blueberries. The price is also based on product quality," added Mr. Huang.

Guangzhou Wanxin International Trade Co., Ltd. is specialized in fruit import and the wholesale of premium domestic fruit. They primarily sell their fruit via wholesale markets, and their assortment includes blueberries, cherries, grapes, apples, and various stone fruits (plums, peaches, etc.).
