91.35% of the mango for export production area is located in Guayas

Ecuador exported more than 15 million boxes of mango in the 2021 season

Ecuador exported 15.3 million boxes of mango in the 2021 mango season, stated the Phytosanitary and Zoosanitary Regulation and Control Agency (Agrocalidad) on Thursday.

Ecuador exported Tommy Atkins, Haden, Kent, Keith, Ataulfo, Nan Doc May, Francique, and Naomi mangoes, among other varieties. The United States was the main destination for the Ecuadorian mangoes exported between the first week of September 2021 and the second week of January 2022. The second destination market was Colombia.

Agrocalidad pointed out that there are currently 95 production sites registered for export with 5,858.52 hectares, 91.35% of them are in Guayas, 6.85% in Los Rios, 1.2% in El Oro, and 0.6% in Santa Elena.

These mango plantations have a surveillance system for monitoring fruit flies, an essential requirement to be able to export this fruit to the main international markets. The surveillance system was developed by Agrocalidad and the Mango Foundation of Ecuador (FME). International phytosanitary organizations of the US, Mexico, and Chile have recognized the system when they have visited the country.

Additionally, the Agency reported that it had a team of 60 trained technicians to attend the fruit packing plants and certify the processes of fruit reception, packaging, certification, hydrothermal treatment, and container dispatch.

Agrocalidad continues working to establish areas that are free of fruit flies and/or have a low prevalence of fruit fly, which allow the entry of Ecuadorian fruit to different international markets.
