Pomegranates play a key role in Tunisia’s markets. They also have a long history in the country; the first known cultivation of the fruit in Tunisia traces back to ancient times. Now, the harvesting season has kicked off and growers have started picking the ripe fruit in the village of Tastour in northern Tunisia, which is ranked among the world’s top 10 pomegranate-producing countries.
Almost all producers in Tunisia will export their crops, as around 80% of the harvests are sold to neighboring countries, as well as the Gulf nations.
