Medlog Piura SAC, a subsidiary of Medlog SA - a transnational company with a presence in more than 70 countries that is part of the MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company group - has opened a fresh fruit packing plant in the Piura Futura industrial park to service producers and exporters of avocado, grape, and mango in the northern macro-region of Peru.
Gonzalo Santillana, director of MSC-Medlog Peru, said that Medlog is the logistics arm that complements the shipping business through land cargo transportation services, container warehouses, warehouses, and distribution centers, among others. "This is the first fruit processing plant in the world in which Medlog ventures, seeking to have a greater presence in the logistics chain of agro-export companies," he said.
Plant details
The packing plant, which required an initial investment of 20 million dollars, is located on a 35,000 m² plot of land just 35 km from the port of Paita, with direct access to the Panamericana Norte highway. It has a Compac calibration line to process avocado and mango, and an artificial vision system to identify defects and colors. It has 4 packaging lines to process grapes, which take into account bag formats and fixed weight.
It also has 11 cooling tunnels and 5 storage chambers with 420 spots each, as well as a dispatch area with 6 dispatch ramps that allow better control and greater agility during the process to load and dispatch containers.
Medlog Piura has BRC, Costco, Fisma, Smeta, and Walmart certifications and Senasa authorization to make shipments to Europe, the United States, and Asia.
Northern Peru's production
The plant began operations in May 2021 serving avocado exporters, a crop that is harvested and exported between April and August of each year.
In the coming months, the grape and mango export campaigns will begin, in September and December 2021 respectively, and Medlog Piura has already been completing negotiations of packaging services with exporters of both products.
The company seeks to process 3,000 containers per year during the first 3 years of operation. Its activity has already generated employment for 200 people in the area and, according to estimates, by the end of 2021, it will generate some 800 new jobs during the grape and mango campaigns.
