Peruvian fruit export to China fell by more than 50% in the first half of 2020

The outbreak of Covid-19 had a disastrous impact on the international fruit market. Peruvian fruit export to China in the first half of this year declined by 56.4% in comparison with the same period last year. Data on the Peruvian fresh fruit news website Fresh Fruit Peru, China imported 4.44 billion USD worth of fruit, which is a decline of 28% in comparison with the same period last year. The value of Peruvian fruit export to China was around 82 million USD, which is a decline of 56.4%. Peru only accounts for about 1.8% of the Chinese fruit import. Egypt pushed Peru down to number 9 on the list of largest fruit exporters to China.

The three most important export fruits in the trade between Peru and China are grapes (32%), avocados (30%), and oranges (19%). The most important importer of Peruvian fruit is the Zhejiang Ouheng Import and Export Company. This company is responsible for 32% of the Peruvian fruit export to China. The second-largest importer of Peruvian fruit is Shanghai Huizhan International Co., Ltd. (18%).

Data from Fresh Fruit Peru also shows that Peruvian fruit export to Europe declined by only 6%. The value of Peruvian fruit export to Europe was around 1.29 billion USD in the first half of 2020.
