The price of Spanish lemons increases by almost 60%

Although the price of lemons in the Spanish province of Alicante has fallen slightly this week, standing between 0.38 and 0.45 Euro per kilo, they remain at high levels. To be precise, they are 59.68% higher than at this same time last year, when the fruit was sold for between 0.22 and 0.30 Euro per kilo, according to data from the Council of Agriculture of the Region of Valencia.

As for the rest of citrus fruits, the Lonja de Valencia reported that mandarin prices this week have stood between the 0.18 Euro per kilo of the Ortanique and the 1 Euro of the Tango and Nadorcott. Meanwhile, orange prices have ranged between 0.16 and 0.40 Euro per kilo.

In the Lonja de Córdoba, prices have remained mostly stable due to the low activity recorded these days. The slight increase recorded by Salustiana oranges, currently sold for between 0.18 and 0.22 Euro per kilo at origin, is the only noteworthy development.

The increases are due to the fact that the supply is quite limited this year, especially that of clementines. According to the latest official data (as of October 31, 2019) the production in the 2019/20 citrus campaign is expected to fall in the case of clementines (-38.4 %), Satsumas (-29.5%), grapefruit (-20.3%), oranges (-16.7%) and lemons (-16.4%).
