Chinese strawberries are quite a recent trend, but their price keeps falling

The strawberry harvest has already begun. The supply of strawberries to the Jiangnan Market continues to grow every day. The strawberries currently for sale mainly come from Anhui, Dandong, and Yunnan, with a small supply volume coming from Chengdu. The main varieties are the Zhangji strawberry (also known as cream strawberry) and Hongyan strawberry. The strawberries arrived on the market one week earlier than last year, but the price is also lower than last year. There are several reasons for this development:

1. Regional prices
The price changes per region. The price is relatively high in the suburbs of developed cities. "The properties of the fruit decide the price" is generally only true in small areas and has no impact on other areas.

2. Nearby prices
Sellers can not set a price that is too high, or the market will disappear. They can not set the price too low or they will suffer a loss. Generally, they ask around to see at what price other sellers are selling their strawberries and they set their price at the same level.

3. Product variety and product quality
When the strawberries arrive on the market, but farmers in nearby production areas have not yet entered the market, in that case the price will be relatively high. However, when nearby farmers have also entered the market, then the price will depend on product quality and strawberry variety.

4. Surface area devoted to strawberry plantation
The price is generally decided based on the relationship between supply and demand. As for supply, the overall surface area devoted to strawberry plantation significantly expanded this year. The price of strawberries was relatively high last year and the profit margin was big, so many farmers followed the trend and began to plant strawberries. In many production areas the overall surface area devoted to strawberry plantation continues to expand.
