Growing demand for planned raspberry plants

The production of raspberries can be planned so as to avoid waiting times. Alessandro Gualandi from Vivai Molari explains that demand for these striplings is on the up.

"We provide the necessary chill hours in the nursery, so producers only need to plant the striplings. Production can be obtained in 90 days. It is the ideal solution for those who manage to plan accurately, this way they can sign contracts with clients. Demand is increasing both in Italy and abroad."

Striplings are suitable for both southern Italy and summer in the north. Demand is coming in from Spain as well. Plants supplied are 180 cm high and producers only need to plant them and put fertigation drips in place.

"We are also working on our breeding program to select new varieties. We focus on criteria such as fruit flavor, appearance, color, texture, productivity and shelf-life. We have valid material that needs to be tested."

Tests are being carried out both in Italy and abroad to verify the behavior in various areas. The purpose is to obtain new varieties with better characteristics that can extend the production calendar.

"Some selections are looking good. There is one suitable for fall that could enable us to extend the harvesting calendar."
