Planting almost complete for new season

UK: Positive end to carrot season

The new season for English carrots is just about to start and it is looking promising. Alan Hunt from FreshGro said that last year's stock is just about done so the timing is good.

"Last year's stocks lasted longer than we expected, we should go until the 2nd week in June all being well. We are very happy how the season went, we were lucky in that we were able to irrigate during the long dry period last year which allowed the crop to get established. I think in general everyone had a better than expected crop."

The prices for carrots at the moment is reasonable according to Alan. "There are many variations so it is difficult to say for sure, also the prices for carrots have been very low for a long time and as a grower I would like to see them increase so we can invest in the future."

For FreshGro, based in Nottingham-shire, planting for this year is almost complete and the first harvest is due to start in a few weeks. "We will get some new season carrots from a grower in Suffolk next week so we may be able to leave ours in the ground to bulk up a bit before we harvest them."

Alan has also imported some Chantenay from Spain to fill a four week window and carrots from Israel.
