Oaxaca is Mexico's second biggest producer of pineapples with 139,867 tons per year, just below Veracruz, and the Papaloapan Basin region is one of the most suitable areas for this crop.
The government of Oaxaca stated that Mexico is the ninth biggest producer of pineapples in the world, with 999,861 tons last year, which allows it to have greater surpluses to export this fruit and reach more countries; 23 in 2017.
Oaxaca has been the second biggest producer of pineapple since 2012, contributing 12.8% of the national volume and increasing its production each year. In 2017 it produced 130,407 tons of pineapple and in 2018 it produced 9,460 more, according to the 2018 Agricultural Food Atlas.
The region of the Papaloapan Basin is the area with the highest production, especially the municipalities of Loma Bonita and San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec.
Pineapple production has a commercial value of around 2.899 billion pesos and annual consumption per capita stands at 6.9 kilograms.
The head of the Ministry of Agricultural Development, Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sedapa), Carlos Grau Lopez said Oaxaca was the seventh biggest producer of citrus in the country, with nearly 318 thousand tons per year.
Sedapa is working to reopen the Loma Bonita processing plant in order to generate market growth and opportunities for pineapple producers.
