Bestselling fruit and veg in Germany
Private households in Germany bought 85.4 kg of fresh fruit per household in 2014, which is close to two percent less than in 2013. They also spent less money on fresh fruit in 2014, spending 153.56 Euro per household, nearly five percent less than 2013, reports the German website Fruchtportal.de. At the same time, fresh vegetable consumption rose by almost two percent, to 70.3 kg. In contrast to the rise in consumption, spending fell by about one percent, to 147.76 Euro per household.
Looking at fresh fruit in 2014, German households bought the most apples (18.5 kg), bananas (15.6 kg), oranges (9.3 kg), Easy Peelers (6.6 kg), grapes (4.8 kg), strawberries (4.4 kg), melons (4.4 kg), pears 3.2 kg), nectarines (3.0 kg) and pineapple (2.1 kg). Moving on to fresh vegetables, German households bought the most tomatoes (11.4 kg), carrots (8.3 kg), onions (7.5 kg), cucumbers (7.4 kg), bell peppers (5.9 kg), iceberg lettuce (3.1 kg), asparagus (2.4 kg), cauliflower (2.0 kg), leek (1.7 kg), and zucchini (1.7 kg).
