Vietnam and China sign protocol for fresh jackfruit exports

Vietnam and China have signed a protocol allowing the export of fresh Vietnamese jackfruit to the Chinese market, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. The protocol was signed on November 27 during a meeting between Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Duc Thang and Zhao Zenglian, Deputy Director of the General Administration of Customs of China.

The agreement follows four other protocols signed this year covering chilli and passion fruit. During the meeting, the GACC reiterated China's commitment to opening markets for Vietnamese agricultural products, while Vietnam stated its intention to strengthen cooperation in agriculture and the environment.

Fresh jackfruit has long been exported to China through various channels. Under the new protocol, exports will be standardised to meet China's phytosanitary and quality requirements. According to the ministry, this is expected to reduce trade risks and support the expansion of jackfruit production under Good Agricultural Practices. The agreement is also expected to aid the development of value-added processing and stabilise grower returns.

Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports reached nearly US$7.1 billion in the first ten months of 2025, a year-on-year increase of 15.1 per cent. China remained the largest outlet, accounting for 62.9 per cent of shipments. The ministry expects the new protocol to reinforce current export momentum and support the country's target of US$8.5 billion in fruit and vegetable exports for the full year.
