Azerbaijan resumes imports of dates from India and exports peppers, hazelnuts in 2025

From January to September 2025, Azerbaijan imported 5,702 tons of fresh or dried dates worth $9.1 million, marking a 22% decrease in volume and a 14% decline in value compared to the same period in 2024. During this period, dates were mainly sourced from Iran, Tunisia, Israel, Palestine, and Algeria. India supplied a small trial shipment of 0.04 tons valued at $300, marking its first delivery since 2011, according to the State Statistics Committee.

In the same period, Azerbaijan exported 33.5 tons of peppers worth $28,000, tripling both volume and value compared to January–September 2024. Key destinations included:

  • Russia: 20.8 tons (+75%), $16,800 (+84%)
  • Georgia: 12.5 tons, $7,900
  • Saudi Arabia: 0.2 tons, $3,300 (no shipments last year)

Notably, Azerbaijan last exported pepper to Georgia in 2013 (3.4 tons worth $300).

Between January and September 2025, Azerbaijan exported 13,486 tons of hazelnuts worth $100.4 million, up 13% in volume and 38% in value compared to the same period in 2024. Export destinations included:

  • Russia: 6,510 tons (−15%), $44.1 million (−0.5%)
  • Germany: 2,145 tons (+62%), $18.3 million (+82%)
  • Italy: 1,366 tons (+63%), $12 million (×2 in value)
  • For the first time in 14 years (official statistics publicly available since 2011), Azerbaijan exported hazelnuts to Syria: 46 tons worth $472,400.
