Mina, a new protected mandarin variety, was presented in Murcia

Last Friday, the Murcia Association of Fruit and Vegetable Businesses hosted the launch of Mina, a new protected mandarin variety developed by GEA Biotechnology in collaboration with Universitat Jaume I (Castellón). The event was attended by more than 60 industry professionals, including growers, Murcian exporters, technicians, and nursery operators.

The variety's key traits, evaluation results, and upcoming season program were presented at the event. Mina is notable for its vibrant orange color, balanced flavor, and excellent color retention on the tree and after harvest. Its harvest runs from mid-November to mid-January, covering a core citrus season. Despite rising temperatures, it retains firmness and quality, and after bad weather, it keeps its skin intact, reducing bruising and damage.

Mina can help expand Murcia's citrus offer, especially during the high-demand period from mid-November to mid-January, thanks to its consistent internal and external quality.

GEA Biotechnology's ongoing investment in R&D&I in recent years to develop agronomic and varietal solutions focused on sustainability, quality, and competitiveness in the citrus industry was also emphasized.

The variety is protected in the European Union, the United States, and Peru, and it is in the process of being registered in Morocco, Turkey, South Africa, and Australia, strengthening its international presence.
