Mercadona has reported sales of 184,800 tons of Spanish potatoes so far this year, representing a 35% increase compared to 2024. The growth is attributed to the company's dual-harvest model, which includes both winter and summer production cycles.
According to the company, 160,000 tons were purchased during the summer campaign, running from May to September, while 24,800 tons came from the previous winter harvest between August and December 2024. This approach has enabled Mercadona to offer Spanish-grown potatoes for eight consecutive months.

Laura Merino, Mercadona's potato specialist, said that favourable weather conditions supported strong production and quality levels during the 2025 summer campaign. "This has been possible thanks to the recovery of winter crops in warmer areas such as Andalusia, the Region of Murcia, and the Balearic Islands, and the good weather during the summer months, which has made the summer campaign particularly strong in terms of production and quality," she said.
Potatoes were sourced from across Spain, including regions such as Andalusia, Murcia, the Balearic Islands, Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Galicia, the Valencian Community, the Basque Country, and the Canary Islands. The company said its supply chain involves several long-term local partners, including Patatas Hijolusa, Patatas Meléndez, Patatas Gómez, Udapa, Cadimisa, Illacamp, Papacan, Mr. Chippy, and Legufrut.
Mercadona stated that 85% of its products are of domestic origin, with Spanish potatoes prioritised when supply and quality standards are met. During both the summer and winter campaigns, stores stock 100% Spanish potatoes from different growing regions when available.
With the 2025 domestic harvest now completed in most areas, imported potatoes from France are being supplied to maintain availability until the end of the year. However, some local products, including 2-kilogram bags of frying potatoes on the mainland and in the Balearic Islands, and white-fleshed potatoes in Galicia and Asturias, will remain available until early 2026.
From January to February 2026, Mercadona expects to resume nationwide distribution of Spanish potatoes with the new Verdete winter variety, extending the presence of domestic potatoes during months when they are not traditionally available.
