Threefold increase in Canary avocado exports and consolidation of papaya growth

The Canary Islands recorded a threefold increase in its avocado shipments to the Spanish mainland and European markets in 2024 compared to the previous year, as reported by the regional government's Councilor of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty, Narvay Quintero, during the opening of Fruit Attraction in Madrid.

Last year, the volume of avocados marketed outside the archipelago reached 424,632 kilos worth 1.3 million euros, compared to the 142,000 kilos and 0.4 million euros recorded in 2023. This growth, according to Quintero, "is a testament to the dynamism of a crop which has seen its acreage double in the last decade."

The Councilor also stressed that the recent Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Aguacate de Canarias will provide added value to the product, by offering a guarantee of origin and quality that will strengthen its position with European distributors and consumers.

During his speech, Quintero also highlighted the development of Canary papayas as an export product. In 2024, sales to mainland Spain and other European countries reached 10.8 million kilos, worth 12.6 million euros.

In the last four years, the market value of this fruit's exports has doubled, from 5.9 million euros in 2020 to the current 12.6 million; a sustained growth driven by a sector committed to organic farming and willing to adapt to consumption trends in destinations such as Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.
