Copa and Cogeca have responded to the conclusion of the EU-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, highlighting both potential opportunities and areas requiring further clarification.
The farm and cooperative organizations noted that while the agreement could benefit certain EU agri-food sectors, its effectiveness will depend on the removal of non-tariff barriers and the establishment of faster, more predictable export procedures.
They welcomed assurances that sensitive EU products, including rice, sugar, eggs, bananas, and ethanol, are protected. The organizations also underlined the importance of maintaining recognition of EU food safety, animal health, and plant health standards. Protection for European Geographical Indications was noted as a key outcome, alongside the inclusion of a Sustainable Food Systems Chapter designed to promote future cooperation between EU and Indonesian institutions and producers.
Copa and Cogeca said that for European farmers and cooperatives to benefit, attention will need to focus on ensuring market access, enforcement of Geographical Indication protections, promotion activities, and strengthening business-to-business relations with Indonesian buyers.
The organizations added that they will undertake a more detailed assessment once the official texts of the agreement are released.
