Ecovative sells Dutch mycelium culture to Klerken family

Ecovative has sold its Netherlands-based subsidiary, Ecovative Spawn & Substrate BV, to the Klerken family, founders of Scelta Mushrooms. The business will continue under the new name Ourcelia and will focus on supporting the mushroom industry with spawn and substrate solutions.

Ecovative, active in mycelium research and applications for two decades, will maintain a long-term relationship with the Klerken family to ensure the supply of spawn products for mushroom and mycelium producers.

Ecovative Spawn & Substrate BV was formerly Lambert Spawn Netherlands, acquired by Ecovative in 2022 from Lambert Spawn in the United States. With the transfer, the Dutch activities will continue under Ourcelia, led by managing director Ies Hooglugt.

Eben Bayer, co-founder and CEO of Ecovative, said: "Ecovative is proud to have grown the global supply chain for Agaricus and AirMycelium spawn from the Netherlands, and we are confident that under the Klerken family's stewardship, Ourcelia will thrive as a dedicated supplier to mushroom growers and mycelium producers worldwide."

Jan Klerken Sr., founder of Scelta Mushrooms, added: "With Ourcelia, we are building on that heritage by expanding our business to include spawn and substrate production. This is a natural continuation of our commitment to advancing mushroom cultivation and supporting growers for decades to come."

Ecovative will now concentrate on its AirMycelium platform, which adapts mushroom farming infrastructure to produce pure mycelium in short cycles. This platform is being applied in food, textiles, and materials projects in the United States.

Ecovative's other ventures include MyForest Foods, producing mycelium-based meat alternatives, and Forager, focusing on textiles. The company also operates a Mycelium Foundry for new applications in food and materials.

For the Klerken family, the launch of Ourcelia marks an extension of their involvement in the mushroom sector, with plans to further develop spawn and substrate production. The aim is to support growers in diversifying crops and expanding market opportunities.
