"Algerian Deglet Nour, our only competition, will continue to be absent from the Moroccan market"

The significant improvement in weather conditions in Tunisia, provided they remain optimal until harvest time, will restore the strong competitive position of Tunisian date exporters on the international market. This is according to Samir Ben Moussa, CEO of Ben Moussa Dattes.

The exporter says, "Our export capacity is improving significantly, even doubling, in the upcoming season compared to the previous season. This is due to a marked improvement in weather conditions and optimal production conditions so far. We are preparing for the upcoming season with high spirits. What weakened us last season was nothing more than the difficulty in sourcing quality dates due to exceptionally poor weather conditions."

Tunisian exporters will enjoy calm competition in their main markets, Ben Moussa anticipates. He adds, "Morocco remains our main market, where we have historical experience. In the Deglet Nour variety, Algerian exports, I.e., our only competition, will continue to be absent from the Moroccan market. This variety also remains the most popular among consumers and traders in Morocco, which gives us an advantage over our Egyptian competitors."

"In our other international markets, too, Algeria only dominates the French market. Tunisian exporters are better established in the rest of Europe, Russia, and Asia, where the Deglet Nour variety has a long-standing and solid customer base. At Ben Moussa Dattes, the restoration of normal production volumes is enabling us to explore new markets in North America and other Asian countries such as Indonesia," Ben Moussa continues.

Thanks to the expected increase in harvest volumes in Tunisia next season, exporters have the flexibility to apply aggressive pricing, according to Ben Moussa. He concludes, "We offer importers the capacity to obtain attractive margins given the quality of our dates."
