Summer is a good time for field cucumber supply, and this one is no different. "We have a growing region just about six hours south of us here at the McAllen, TX border, so the product is packed, cooled, and put on a truck, and then, six to eight hours later, we have it here. So it's nice and fresh versus from out West, where it can take 2 ½ days to get to us," says Tony Incaviglia of GR Fresh.
For GR Fresh, supply comes from this region from June through October, and the current supply looks similar to this time last year.
As for demand, it's also good. "We have a good following, though it's a competitive time because there are growing regions such as Michigan, New Jersey, the southeast in the Carolinas, and then there are smaller growing operations happening at this time of the year as well," says Incaviglia. "There's a lot out there."

Cucumber pricing update
All of this is leaving pricing favorable. "The markets have been pretty good, and it varies anywhere between $16-$17, depending on where you look," he says. "The only challenge is that there's a wide range of domestic cucumbers available."
Looking ahead, usually towards the end of August and into September, the local deals wind down depending on their weather situations. "Then markets usually jump, and it wouldn't be surprising to people to see them jump to the mid $20s," says Incaviglia.
