Professional agricultural organization Asaja Murcia has estimated that, based on initial production surveys of Primofiori and Fino lemons conducted by its technical services, there will be a 35 to 45% decrease in production compared to last season.
"Many factors could cause this estimate to vary. Water restrictions, thrips, red spider mites, and other factors could lead to an even greater decline," stated Juan de Dios Hernández, Asaja Murcia's president.
"Thanks to the efforts of producers, we'll have better quality this season. Phytosanitary treatments have been intensified to achieve this quality and to ensure that the product has that much-needed added value for farmers," he stressed.
"Our organization believes that it is necessary to find a balance between production and economic operators. We must all work so producers can invest more in their harvests and recover the quality that has differentiated us from competing countries," he said.
"We are going to intensify the meetings with the Ministry of Agriculture to promote Verna lemon plantations. Our goal is to close the gap and have domestic production throughout the year. That will help us decrease imports from other countries. It will also curb the entry of pests and diseases, which seriously affect the trees and production."
"We are also very worried about the 'new generation of storms', which appear without warning, are unleashed violently, and even cause hail, which devastates our crops, leaving us powerless to do anything to prevent them," he stated.
