Álvaro Martínez, Axarfruit:

Spain is expected to double its mango production this year

According to the initial harvest forecasts for the Axarquía region of Malaga, there will be a strong recovery in mango production. Avocado production, which is increasing in different Spanish provinces, is also expected to improve.

In recent years, Malaga's mango harvests have been significantly lower than their productive potential due to the impact of unfavorable weather conditions and prolonged drought. Instead of the potential 60,000 tons of mangoes that Spain could harvest annually, the yield in 2024 was only 20,000 tons.

"At the moment, it looks like this year, Malaga will produce twice as much mango as last season," said Álvaro Martínez, manager of Axarfruit. This Malaga company grows and sells organic and conventional avocados and mangoes. "The heavy rainfall at the end of last year and in the spring has restored water reserves in reservoirs and wells needed for mango and avocado crops," he stated.

"Summer has been relatively mild so far, with fewer heat waves. This means less stress for the trees, which benefits fruit development," Martínez added.

"If the forecasts are met, Spain would strengthen its position in the European mango market. A larger offer would enable us to sell proximity mangoes at competitive prices, as overseas mango prices are currently high due to logistical challenges. If production is good this year, it will be difficult to compete with the Spanish mango in September and October."

Axarfruit is currently working with mangoes from Senegal and Brazil. Their quality is good and, on average, prices are higher than last year, Martínez said.

"The avocado market is currently saturated with supply, especially from Peru, where the harvest has increased by 15 to 20%. Avocado consumption increases every year, but supply peaks like the current one cannot be easily absorbed. Especially not during the summer holidays, when the shelves are filled with other summer fruits," Martínez stated.

Axarfruit continues to grow and expand its production area to other regions outside of the Axarquía, such as Cádiz and Valencia, where it has recently acquired new plantations.
