Ersan Yildizak from disFruta Fruchtimport GmbH in Duisburg:

"A bumper year for watermelons, a difficult season for stone fruit"

The European watermelon campaign is now well into its second half. "The Moroccan season was very long this year, with the last deliveries arriving here in week 28. Otherwise, there are currently plenty of watermelons from Turkey, Italy, Spain, and Greece. Due to the heat, demand was also predominantly high and stable, so we were able to record very good sales overall. With the start of the holiday season, demand usually declines gradually," reports Ersan Yildizak, managing director of disFruta Fruchtimport GmbH in Duisburg.

Difficult stone fruit season
In addition to watermelons in numerous varieties, peaches, nectarines, apricots, and other fruits are currently dominating the market. Yildizak: "Due to severe frost damage in Turkey, I would describe this year's season as particularly difficult. Spain has also seen weather-related losses across the entire stone fruit category, which have had a corresponding impact on supply." In the nectarine and peach sector, the last late varieties of the season are now arriving, and Turkish sugar apricots are expected to be available until the end of July/beginning of August, the fruit importer continues.

While the European stone fruit season is slowly coming to an end, the fig season is only just getting started. "The first Italian loads are already in circulation, but we will have to wait until mid-August for the first Turkish arrivals. In both the early areas, such as Mersin and Aydin, and in the main growing region of Bursa, the forecasts so far point to a good harvest year," says Yildizak.

One of the first exhibitors at Interfresh
DisFruta Fruchtimport GmbH was founded in 2011 and has been based at its modern premises in Duisburg (approx. 5,000 m²) for three years. The company currently employs around 25 people and is primarily dedicated to supplying wholesale markets (approx. 80 percent) and selected food retail customers throughout the DACH region, the Netherlands, and France. As one of the leading importers with a focus on Turkey, the company has been a regular exhibitor at Interfresh (September 18-20) for many years. "We were one of the first foreign exhibitors there at the time and have steadily expanded our booth space over the years. For us, the trade fair remains an outstanding platform for talking to both suppliers and customers," concludes Yildizak.
