Sipo (Italy) is expanding its range of references

Peppers and sweet corn among summer's staples

With sweet long peppers, spicy Cornetto chili peppers, Friggitello peppers, squash blossoms, and sweet corn, Sipo's summer harvest is marked by both time-honored favorites and fresh additions to the range. "The sweet long pepper is a new item that was just added and is already in high demand," says Simona Donini, the company's quality manager. "Its name sums up its two main characteristics: its shape and its main organoleptic quality." People want a highly digestible pepper with thin skin and a mild flavor. Our peppers stand out from similar products due to their unique shape and exceptional flavor, which even those who aren't fond of peppers can appreciate."

The sweet long pepper is in high demand in wholesale markets and among large-scale retailers. "The guaranteed weight per tray is 500 grams, with a mix of yellow and red peppers. Our partner farmers in Sicily currently cultivate this variety in greenhouses."

The Friggitello is another type of mild pepper that Sipo specializes in. "We grow it in our greenhouses adjacent to the processing plant, which is only 50 meters away, making it a true zero-km product. We offer it in 300- and 500-gram cardboard trays, as well as in 500-gram trays."

"Ensuring the wide availability of packaging is a top priority for Sipo," says owner Massimiliano Ceccarini. He was recently named vice president of Confagricoltura Forlì-Cesena and Rimini, the local organization of agricultural companies. "This allows us to meet our customers' needs. We have two brands: Verdure di Romagna, featuring local produce, and Sapori del Mio Orto, featuring produce from other regions."

Another pepper from the same botanical family is the spicy Cornetto, which is often used in more elaborate dishes. In this case, it is cultivated in Sicily year-round and weighs 150 grams.

"They are as popular as they are delicate," Donini continues. "Courgette flowers are available year-round. Some companies in the Lazio region cultivate them because they are highly specialized, and the product is perishable. The packages weigh 60 grams, and the secret to selling courgette flowers is picking them at the right time and delivering them to market quickly."

Sweet corn is the real revelation of the summer of 2025. "Demand is increasing exponentially. A farmer with 40 hectares of land grows it in the Campania region. We can pack it in 450-gram trays, two-cob trays, or sell it loose to retailers who want to cook it themselves. We started out almost for fun, and to date, we produce dozens of pallets every week," says Ceccarini.
