Willem Dijk junior, Willem Dijk AGF:

"We see strong potential for Moldovan fruit in the specialty segment and the German market"

Willem Dijk Junior and Han Daniels recently visited Moldova in search of new opportunities in fruit. "Our trip to Moldova was sparked by curiosity and the recurring signals that this country is rapidly developing into a serious player in the European fruit market. While Moldova was once unknown territory for many fruit and vegetable traders, we now clearly see improvements in quality, organisation, and export orientation," says Willem.

"Through a client of ours, we got in touch with several Moldovan producers. What began as an exploratory conversation quickly developed into a concrete plan: we wanted to see for ourselves what Moldova really has to offer. Last year, we cautiously began trading some Moldovan fruit. Those positive experiences encouraged us to take things a step further this year and explore the possibilities on a larger scale."

"And that enthusiasm was only reinforced on-site," Willem continues. "During our visit, we were pleasantly surprised by the professionalism of the farms, the modern cultivation techniques, and, above all, the quality of the fruit. In particular, grapes and stone fruit (such as apricots, plums, peaches, and nectarines) showed that Moldova is holding the right cards."

"The country benefits from an excellent climate, with hot summers and fertile soils. Combined with a rich tradition in fruit growing, this results in flavourful, firm fruit with a long shelf life and excellent presentation. Exactly the qualities that we and our customers value."

"Logistically as well, Moldova is well equipped for the European market, making it an attractive trading partner. We especially see potential for Moldovan fruit in the specialty segment, where quality and taste truly make the difference. In addition, the German market presents a key sales opportunity for us, a market where presentation, traceability, and reliability are crucial, and exactly where Moldova excels."

"To further support this, we will package Moldovan fruit under our own label: Fresh Fruits From Moldova by Willem Dijk AGF. With this, we guarantee our customers consistent quality, direct sourcing, and a recognisable presentation that aligns with our story and values," says Willem.

"For us, Moldova is not a replacement for existing sources, but a valuable addition. A partner with whom we aim to build, explore, and grow in the coming years. Because if one thing became clear during this trip, it is that Moldova is ready for Europe, and we are ready for Moldova!"
