Brazilian lime prices rise in Europe after critical months

The European market for Brazilian Tahiti lime has experienced a drastic turnaround in a matter of weeks. In the first half of the year, prices were below the cost of production. July brought a remarkable recovery, boosted by the arrival of summer and a lower availability of Brazilian limes.

According to data from the Aschenberger system, Brazil exported a total of 3,544 containers to the port of Rotterdam up to week 27 of 2025, just 2.02% more than in the same period of 2024. Estimates suggest the country will export 150 containers per week in July, August, and September due to lower supply in the field.

"In the first half of the year, the Brazilian product achieved an average FOB selling price of 2.85 euros per 4.5 kg box, or 0.63 euros per kilo. Meanwhile, the cost of production stood at around 3.30 euros per box (0.73 euros/kg), leaving many exporters operating in the red," stated Sérgio Negrão of Jagrão Brazil.

"However, in recent weeks, the selling price on the European market - especially in the Netherlands - reached 10 euros per box, equivalent to 2.22 euros per kilo, while the FOB price rose to 4.50 euros/box. Considering all costs, the CIF price plus costs at destination is nearly 7 euros per box, which means the profit margin stands at over 42.86% now. The sector expects it to increase if prices reach 11 euros/box in August," he stressed.

"Lime consumption in Europe is growing year after year. In summer, its appeal increases because it is a refreshing and versatile fruit," Negrão said, highlighting that the country has established itself as an almost exclusive supplier to Europe. "Other countries such as Mexico, Colombia, and Peru prioritize the American market for logistical and price reasons, which has allowed European consumers to get used to Brazilian lime, which stands out for having more juice and a thinner peel," he said.

According to Negrão, the most active destinations this summer include countries with high tourist activity, such as Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia, and Portugal. Logistics costs remain stable with respect to 2024, and there is availability of refrigerated containers, which favors the flow of exports, he added.

In terms of future strategy, Jagrão Brazil has opted to diversify its production areas between the Northeast and Southeast of the country, taking advantage of climatic differences to maintain quality and supply throughout the year. They are not prioritizing specific calibres or markets, but they are preparing to increase their volume by 10% this year if demand allows it.
