The U.S. mango category is dominated by imports, but there is one variety that offers a rare domestic opportunity, which is the organic Keitt mango. It's grown in small, certified organic blocks in California's Coachella Valley where Keitts benefit from intense desert heat during the day and cool nights. "This variety is unlike anything else on the market," says Jason Laffer, VP of Sales at TerraFresh Organics. "The growing conditions are perfect for developing full sugars and flavor, providing an incredibly sweet mango that's virtually fiberless. It truly eats like a dessert," he added.
Large size fruit
Harvest typically starts in late August and stretches through October. The timing of harvest is favorable as it falls in a window with very limited options for organic mango supply. This late-season window gives the mango an opportunity to size up, resulting in a stunningly large piece of fruit. In addition, a firm texture, green skin when ripe, and an exceptional shelf life offer advantages in retail, distribution, as well as on display. While production volume has shown year-over-year increases, demand for Keitt mangos continues to outpace supply. "The variety has developed a cult following," said Laffer. "Once people try it, they wait all year for it to return." As a result, he is anticipating another season where industry demand won't be fully met.

Largest supplier
