The start of the stone fruit season went reasonably well at De Groot Fruit & Vegetables, despite some early shortages caused by hail damage in the spring and the high demand for promotional volumes from retailers across Europe. "At the moment, supply from Llerida is in full swing, and we're seeing a steady flow of good-quality produce in large volumes. At the same time, improving weather conditions in Northern Europe are giving a general boost to fruit sales, particularly for stone fruit," says John van der Zouwen.
"The trend of paraguayos gaining market share over peaches has continued in recent years. The traditional peach is steadily losing ground and is almost becoming a niche product, with only the larger sizes still attracting interest. Currently, there is a shortage, which is helping to keep prices at decent levels. Platerinas have never gained the same momentum as paraguayos, likely due to recurring quality issues and limited shelf life. For now, we're not selling large volumes of these, but if better varieties become available, we'll be happy to take them on."
De Groot Fruit & Vegetables serves a broad customer base, retail, wholesale, and foodservice, both domestically and internationally, through its wholesale business in Breda.
