High demand for Egyptian red onions from Germany through the Netherlands

Egyptian onion exporters are enjoying a stable season, with no difficulties in sourcing onions or finding buyers. Mostafa Medhat, managing director of Tut Produce, says: "The season is proceeding calmly, with sufficient production of good quality and sufficient demand."

Medhat adds: "At Tut Produce, we are currently exporting yellow onions to Russia, Poland, and Romania, and red onions to the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain, and Italy. Prices are currently satisfactory, reflecting a healthy and stable market."

After a period of strong demand for onions on the Russian market, the situation has now calmed down, according to Medhat, with the arrival of Russian domestic production about 20 days ago.

According to the exporter, the current period of the season is marked by an increase in exports to the Netherlands. He explains: "A lot of red onions, especially small ones, are exported to the Netherlands and then to Germany, where there is a shortage. It is more advantageous to export to the Netherlands first, as the shipping time to the port of Rotterdam is 10 to 12 days, compared to 18 days to the port of Hamburg. This also saves us from having to deal with the overly rigid requirements of the German market."

The onion harvest in Egypt continues until June 25, and the export season to the EU ends on July 15, according to the exporter. "Exporters are preparing to start storing onions, and then the season will be over. Prices will soon decrease and remain low for the rest of the season, as usual," Medhat concludes.
