April saw an uptick in Brazilian banana exports, as per Comex Stat data. Shipments to Mercosur reached 7.6 thousand tons, marking a 24% increase over March's figures. Exports to the European Union rose to 1.8 thousand tons, climbing by 51%. Both destinations recorded higher volumes compared to the same period last year.
Hortifrúti/Cepea exporters attribute this rise to the increased availability of the nanica banana variety, which has enhanced price competitiveness in the global market. Santa Catarina in the north serves as the primary exporting region to Mercosur, while Rio Grande do Norte/Ceará supplies the European Union.
The growth in Mercosur-bound exports has been facilitated by decreased supplies from competitors like Bolivia and Paraguay. In Europe, higher demand is potentially linked to weather-related production issues in Central America and countries such as Colombia and Peru, which traditionally supply bananas to the region. Anticipations for late May suggest sustained high export volumes to Mercosur, supported by local price conditions and product availability.
