Uganda reopens direct flights to UK for produce

Uganda has restored direct air connections with the United Kingdom, ending nearly a decade without such links, reports FPC. The route, which began operations in May 2025, delivers dedicated cargo capacity for fresh produce exports such as bananas, avocados, chillies, fine beans, and sweet potatoes directly to the UK.

This development is predicted to optimize transit times and minimize spoilage, thereby improving the shelf life of perishable goods upon arrival in the UK. Market experts note that the direct route will enhance Uganda's competitive edge in European markets due to improved logistics for its high-value agricultural exports.

The introduction of this direct flight, the first since 2015, reflects a strategic shift towards bolstering trade and investment relations between Uganda and the UK. Uganda's fresh produce sector may see potential benefits through this reliable channel, aiding growers and exporters seeking to enter or grow their presence in the UK market.

The re-establishment of direct flights is also viewed as an important move for strengthening Uganda's economic resilience. It aligns with the nation's strategies to emerge as a significant entity in global agricultural trade, offering UK consumers a more varied and stable supply of fresh produce.
