The onion supply in the Netherlands is rapidly declining. "We expect to manage another week, and then the season will be over," says Dignus Boone of the onion grading and packing station BoWa from Waarde. He looks back on a positive end to the season. "No one expected it would end like this. I was much more pessimistic back in December. But my brother, who handles purchasing with us, already said in February that more onions were gone than people realized."

"This week, you can get 55 cents. We still need to find a buyer for the onions we'll process next week, but we don't want to sell them until the end of the week," Dignus continues. For now, the packer is able to keep operations running smoothly. "But when there are fewer players left in the market and you still have onions, you automatically get busier."
The onion quality also remains good. "The onions still on the market now are of fine quality. The poor-quality batches have already been removed. A lot of onions have gone to Poland this year, but because those exports aren't officially registered, that always leaves some uncertainty in the market," says Dignus. The new crop is also looking promising. "The onions got some good water last week, and temperatures of 23 to 24 degrees are expected again at the end of this week, so they'll continue to grow."
