Southern Italy's apricot season begins with good quality

The apricot harvest has begun in Southern Italy, with the regions of Basilicata, specifically around Pisticci and Metapont in the province of Matera, and Apulia's Foggia province emerging as key production zones. As early summer sets in, local orchards are yielding their first apricots, which are already being assessed for quality and market readiness.

In Basilicata, the varieties Colorado, Mambo, and Mogador have shown strong growth, with consistent fruit distribution and sizing. Despite minor hail damage affecting around 15% of the crop and light cracking at approximately 2%, these issues remain within an acceptable range for marketable fruit. According to Nicola Melillo, Quality Manager at KÖLLA Italia, these early apricots are of good quality, meeting expectations for the season.

However, the Mikado variety presents a more mixed picture. Weather conditions have resulted in hail and cracking damage affecting around 25% of the crop, and fruit distribution is less uniform. Despite these setbacks, the remaining healthy fruit is considered suitable for the fresh market.

In the neighboring Apulia region, particularly in Foggia, similar conditions have been reported. The harvest of Mikado and Mogador is already underway. Late frost and localized hail have led to a yield reduction of around 25%, but the available fruit is noted for its even coloration and large size. These characteristics make it appealing for retailers and distributors. Initial shipments have already been sent to food retailers and wholesale markets in Germany, with larger volumes expected from May 20 onward.

Despite occasional weather disruptions, the start of the 2025 apricot season in Southern Italy is considered stable. The fruit quality aligns with market standards, offering apricots that are visually appealing and ripe in flavor. The first shipments began in mid-May, with quantities expected to increase throughout the rest of the month.
