NZ: Ōmataroa Orchard begins first Ruby Red kiwifruit harvest

The inaugural harvest at Ōmataroa Orchard, New Zealand's largest Māori-owned Ruby Red kiwifruit operation, commenced with a karakia led by Rex Anderson of Te Hāhi Ringatū faith. This event marks a step in Ngāti Awa's efforts to reclaim and revitalize their ancestral lands.

Ōmataroa Orchard, located on State Highway 30 in Te Teko, represents a collaborative effort among Ihukatia Trust, Moerangi Kereua Ratahi Trust, Kiwinui Trust, and Ngāti Awa Farms Limited. The latter is wholly owned by Ngāti Awa Group Holdings Limited, the commercial arm of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa.

The orchard serves as more than a commercial enterprise. It aims to restore economic sovereignty for Ngāti Awa, strengthen connections to the land, and create opportunities for future generations. The karakia acknowledged the deep whakapapa of the land and reaffirmed Ngāti Awa's commitment to kaitiakitanga.

Tyrone Newson, Chief Executive at NAGL, stated, "This isn't just about growing fruit—it's about growing our future." The initiative reflects Ngāti Awa Group Holdings Limited's long-standing focus on economic resilience and self-determination, with investments in primary industries like forestry and farming.

The establishment of Ōmataroa Orchard aligns with this kaupapa, ensuring that the land provides for Ngāti Awa in a culturally meaningful and commercially viable manner. As the first pick begins, the orchard embodies Ngāti Awa's aspirations to develop their lands for the benefit of present and future generations.
