Mark Everett - Worldwide Fruit

“There is a refreshing optimism about the forthcoming Peru season"

"The avocado supply from Israel in the main has been going well and the quality of the fruit we have received so far has been good," said Mark Everett, Business Unit Director – Avocados at Worldwide Fruit. "There have been some challenges with shipping and recent strikes in the port of FOS (France) but we have been able to maintain supply."

Spanish avocado production in Andalucía has bounced back with better rains helping to ease the drought situation. Also, new production areas in Spain continue to help support the overall offer.

"We are loading weekly from Spain and in general the fruit size is trending larger than in previous seasons and the quality is very good. We continue to receive weekly arrivals from Chile and the fruit is now delicious due to the higher dry matter delivering a rich nutty taste in this window of supply. The shipping from Chile has been particularly challenging this season with container arrivals routinely being later than expected and, in some instances, containers arriving weeks after the expected delivery time."

According to Mark, Morocco has had good volumes of Hass this season and they have been very pleased with the performance of the fruit. "We are expecting Morocco to continue loading into early March."

Optimism for Peruvian season
"There is a refreshing optimism about the forthcoming Peru season, the early Highland's fruit looks to be of very good quality on the tree. We are monitoring dry matter levels weekly and are expecting to start the harvest in the coming weeks.

"The dynamics of the entire avocado market are changing slightly as Spain and Morocco are tending to produce a higher percentage of larger sizes compared to previous seasons. For this reason, we are looking forward to supply from Peru and RSA and more abundance of medium and small sizes."
