About 1,000 Morrisons staff in West Yorkshire and Cheshire have started strike action in a row over pensions and take-home pay. Staff at the supermarket's warehouses in Wakefield and Northwich are taking part in industrial action which began at 05:00 BST on Thursday and runs until 05:00 on Sunday.

Supermarket group Ahorramas reported a positive year in 2023, achieving record highs in terms of both sales and profits. Gross turnover reached a historic high of €2.19bln, a jump of 11.2% from the previous year. Elsewhere, net profit soared by 36.2% to €114.3mln, while EBITDA was 25% higher at €205.7mln.

Czech online grocer Rohlik ramps up German expansion as rivals quit
As foreign online grocery delivery rivals exit Germany, Czech Republic-based Rohlik Group is ramping up in Europe's biggest economy and is on track to break even within the next 12 months, founder and chief executive Tomas Cupr told Reuters. The privately held company, valued at more than $1bln in 2021, operates under the Knupsr.de brand in Germany and opened in Berlin in April after launching in Munich in 2021 and Frankfurt in 2022.

Romania's Profi confirms strong growth in 2023
Romanian food retailer Profi has reaffirmed its strong growth trajectory of recent years, reporting an 11% annual increase in revenue in 2023, to RON12.9bln (€2.6bln). Net profit dropped from a negative RON286mln (€57mln) in 2022 to a negative RON213mln (€43mln) in 2023.

Pepco Group, the fast-growing pan-European variety discount retailer, reported interim results for the six-month period ended 31 March 2024. Key highlights: Record H1 Group revenue of €3.2bln, up 13.8% year-on-year ("y-o-y"). Group gross margin up 310 basis points ("bps") to 43.1%, driven by Pepco. Lidl and Kaufland parent Schwarz Group has reported a 'successful' financial year 2023 with an 8.5% increase in revenue to €167.2bln. Discount chain Lidl generated revenue of €125.5bln at its stores, up 9.4% compared to fiscal 2022, while Kaufland reported a 7.8% increase to €34.2bln.

US: PCC posts $10mln loss in 2023, asks members to spend more
PCC Community Markets has asked its members to spend more at the consumer-owned co-op after the company posted a loss of nearly $10mln in 2023. The 15-store chain took a charge of $12.5mln for the closure of its downtown Seattle location, which struggled to drive sales after the loss of office workers in the area. US: BJ's Wholesale Club does well in Q1
BJ's Wholesale Club remains on track for a solid fiscal year as the retailer beat 2024 first-quarter expectations. Comparable club sales increased 1.6% year over year, and comparable club sales, excluding gas, were up 0.6%, led by strong traffic and unit growth.
